Traffic Signal Priority Control Strategy for Connected Emergency Vehicles with Dilemma Zone Protection for Freight Vehicles

This paper presents an emergency vehicle priority control system based on connected technology, called MMITSS priority. Traditional preemption does not consider the effect of current traffic situation, such as presence a freight in dilemma zone, opposing movement and can have significant negative impact minor movements vehicles. A mixed integer linear programming model is developed which requests from multiple vehicles zone that could be trapped zone. The optimization provides optimal schedule minimizes total weighted request delays request, well some flexibility to adapt other real time. flexible implementation signal timing designed improve mobility non-emergency approach has been tested evaluated using microscopic simulation. simulation experiments show proposed method able travel time street while ensuring safe passage at without significantly delaying implemented Maricopa County SMARTDrive Program SM test bed Anthem, Arizona.
